FLEET & PILOTS
Miami Seaplane Tours had its
genesis...
...in the 1980s when Tony Anderson became a commercial pilot,
hoping to get hired by the big airlines. As a young man with a family
to support, Tony had to turn down several offers that required him to
relocate. It was his first flight in an ultralight airplane that ignited
a new passion for flying these very light and open airplanes.
After becoming a flight instructor, and as an entrepreneur at heart,
Tony founded his first aviation-related business in 1995, known as Fun
Flight Miami. Looking for the right place, he settled on an easily
accessible area at Key Biscayne. A few years later, the name of the
business was changed to Ultralight Adventures, with the mission of
training a growing number of ultralight enthusiasts as pilots.
You could say, Tony was a very happy man, eager to get up and fly to
work every day!
After the turn of the new century, there were several factors that
seemed to converge, causing Tony to rethink his business model after
finding more people who wanted to go on scenic tours to see the skyline
of Miami, the pristine waters of Biscayne Bay, South Beach and other
popular landmarks. And while they loved the open-cockpit experience of
our ultralights, we could only fly one passenger at a time.
In 2004, the regulations on Ultralight Airplanes changed dramatically.
The ultralights Tony used to train pilots in, went from being an
ultralight to a light sport aircraft. This resulted in a variety of
changes in everything from licensing to maintenance and training.
With
this as a catalyst, Tony, who by this time had brought his son Adriel
into the business, began thinking of a new direction: One that would
entail a broader scope - a new business devoted primarily to aerial
tours.
After much research and investigation, Tony and Adriel settled on the
popular Cessna 172 Seahawk seaplane because it had better payload
capacity, was easier to modify and perhaps most important these days, it
had far superior fuel efficiency. Cessna airplanes are considered the
most successful mass produced aircraft in history!
With Tony's vast knowledge of the mechanical side of airplanes, he
completely renovated and aerodynamically enhanced the plane, which is
the first airplane in a planned fleet. One obvious benefit to our Cessna 172 Seahawk seaplane is that it can hold three people plus the pilot, whereas the ultralight can only hold one other person.
Today with a new name and business model, Miami Seaplane Tours is poised
for dynamic growth.
The sky's the limit!
